It may just be an offer you can’t refuse
A few years ago, I went to Medellín to learn about the culture of the city and to study Spanish. My trip was filled with endless adventures — everything from cooking classes to local trips. I went on a metro cable, that overlooked the mountainous city, Comuna 13 to see the endless murals, Botero sculptures, and even a tour of Pablo Escobar’s grave and neighborhood. The latter, perhaps a strange choice but I was curious. What is our obsession with kingpins anyway?
Our love of gangsters both true and imaginary has dominated the media for decades, from Francis Ford Coppola’s Godfather, to Narcos and most recently to an offshoot of Narcos entitled Griselda. Netflix’s #1 series, Griselda is based on the true story of the ruthless narco, Griselda Blanco. Who, like Pablo Escobar, was a powerful drug lord reining from the city of Medellin. In fact, the opening quote to the series begins with an alleged quote from him,
“The only man I was ever afraid of was a woman named Griselda Blanco.”
Implying that for a woman to be powerful and respected they are referred to as a man. The same may be true for the entertainment industry itself. A…
