Time for more women in film

The internet blew up recently with backlash after Gretta Gerwig and Margot Robbie were both snubbed as Oscar Nominees. The rub was that Ryan Gosling received the best-supporting actor — and thus life imitated art as the man outshadowed the women. and the metaphor of the movie became real.

However, they are not the first minorities to be overlooked and they certainly won’t be the last, but this one act should in no way undermine the success of the movie and what women can accomplish.

Barbie was a blockbuster sensation with over a billion dollars in ticket sales. It was in no way devoid of Oscar nominations, not only did Ryan Gosling get nominated, but so did America Ferrara as well as Greta and Noah Baumbach for best-adapted screenplay. This is an impressive start for a female-run movie. Is it enough? That remains to be seen.

Throughout the years of the Oscars, numerous talented actors and directors never received a single nominations or awards, Samuel Jackson. Spike Lee was only nominated once for a movie, and the list goes on.

While the snub heard around the world is taking center stage, others are not getting the recognition they deserve. Lily Gladstone is the first Native American Woman to ever be nominated for a role and that should be completely celebrated. But…
