All I Want for Christmas is a Good Education Chancellor
This Friday Mayor-Elect Eric Adams released his infamous list of people who will assist in his transitional team after he returns from Ghana to take over as NYC’s next Mayor.
He’s made his list and I’ve made mine of all the qualifications I believe this city needs to help our school system recover. Forget the presents and parties. This year all I want for Christmas is a good Chancellor of Education.
It’s no surprise that Chancellor Meisha Porter will be stepping down to make room for mayor-elect Eric Adam’s new crony. That’s how politics works. Out with the old — in with the new.
But I beg of you Mr. Adams take caution in your nepotism hire because this time there is so much more at stake for both students and staff. This person will more than determine educational competency — they may in fact be saving lives.
I’m a veteran NYC public school middle school teacher and I’ve never seen such a low point in our system. Students, especially those in low-income areas have missed so much school and social support it will take an army of collaborators to get them back.
